Netflix has lifted a corner of the veil on how subscription sharing – also known as account sharing – is being detected and restricted.

Netflix on the attack against account sharing: how does this work?

For clarity. In the Netherlands and Belgium, Netflix has not yet announced any concrete plans to combat account sharing. The streaming service announced a few weeks ago that a technique that makes account sharing transparent is being introduced in phases in all countries where Netflix is active. Netflix then wants to add account sharing to the subscription as an additional option for a fee. Netflix expects to need more than a year after the introduction of the technology to implement it in all countries.

Home location
Netflix made a report in Costa Rica about how it intends to determine whether there is account sharing. The ‘primary location’ or home location plays an important role in this. Subscribers can indicate themselves what this location is. Devices must watch a Netflix title from the home Wi-Fi network at least once a month. If it turns out that registered devices do not use the home location for a longer period of time, these devices can be blocked by Netflix for this subscription.

Pay extra
If devices are used outside the home location, an additional subscription can be purchased to prevent a blockage. In the countries where Netflix is testing this extra subscription, it costs around three dollars on average. A much lower amount than a regular Netflix subscription. The extra costs are settled with the monthly payment of the main user – i.e. the buyer – of the subscription.
